Yes, it can happen to any job. But as any other job, older people can find their positions as well. One way of saving my job these days is the following two folds:

1. Can you compete with the young gun without the salary consideration first? If not, then most likely you won't be able to keep your job in the regular job market way. I have seen people using other ways, but i don't want to mention them. You just need to focus on the competition part.

2. Can you provide additional value based on your age? For example, do you happen to lead other people in the past? Company does spend time to find manager with tech background. If you refuse to lead, your experience still matters, for instance, will you be able to work with other team members smoothly and efficiently.

The reason why people like to mention "old" for older people is that they work drastically slow. As long as you are not slow, trust me, nobody care whether you are an older people or not, at least not in US. US tends to appreciate the true value irregardless of your sex and age. So judge yourself based on your true value as well.

Of course when you need to be washed away, you have to accept that as well. I don't think there's a company in the world would hire a 90 years old guy unless this person can offer a connection that no one else to offer. So this is reality. We are in the job market. We are the meat.
