In the past blog, I have explained that strength isn’t the key element in singing. After more experiment, I started to realize in music, maybe the strength is merely the effects derived from pitch and speed. And since pitch can be tuned by the wavelength, thus speed plays the most vital role in singing. This speed refers to the quickness how you produce a pitch.
Human emotion can be modulated by the music notes (aka pitch). However, there’s another vital element that makes each note very interesting, that is the overall echo. The echo can be artificially created by your recording environment or by your chest/mouth/nose chamber. In general, the environment creates uniform echo to your voice, and makes it a lot more richer than what it’s supposed to be. No wonder we all like to sing in the bathroom.
It’s not well known or at least not in public knowledge that each note (or pitch) can be individually tuned by applying different echo through your singing approach. The reason I say this is that I never heard people talk about echo in singing before. Maybe we use a word “mix” to stand for the mixing of chest and head voice.
For example, you can take one note and practice singing with the chest echo and one without. The one without sounds harsh and the one with echo sounds a bit richer or deeper.
But both (with and without) are extremely important.
If you have never had any training in singing, you tend to have fixed echo with each note due to your nature way of singing or habits. When you approach a high note, you tend to give more echo if you can hit it, and no echo if you can’t hit it, but you can’t give it the proper amount of echo. This makes the final sound relatively not pleasant to listen.
With the right training, once you can hit the note at any time, then you can start to experiment with the right amount of echo to that note. For example, the high note tends to be nicer to listen if you can apply small amount of echo or almost zero echo. This way when the sound is mixed with the reverb, the slice of sound can penetrate a lot far and sound much stronger for our comprehension. On the contrary, if we had given more emphasize to the high note by giving more echo, it would sound very diffused with noise that give the perception of weaker voice.
Singer is almost like a magician to me these days.
Conclusion
Other than the vocal style that you like to pursue, you should try to experiment more on the speed of hitting the note as well as the echo applied to each note. It can give you quite freedom in delivering the emotion that you want to deliver.
