Manage your ego after laid off

Getting laid off is quite difficult. The pain mostly is not from the business looking for new job, instead it’s more from dealing with the self esteem and your ego, which can be quite time-consuming and self destructive if not managed well. After some experimentation from my own, I’d like to propose something that can remedy the pain.

Personal with your employer

One of the thing is that, getting laid off reminds me the break-up from my partner when she told me it’s all her fault not mine. Your mind can be suddenly filled up with lots of hate, betrayer and self pity. That most of time all comes from your ego. Since none of them speaks the truth of the current situation.

The only fact from the laid off is that you got laid off by your employer. This relationship ends today. Nothing else can be implied from there if you don’t spend too much time pulling your brains out.

If you can take the current situation without your own interpretation, you might soon realize the situation isn’t too bad. Because you can start to look for a new opportunity, an opportunity that you might never be able to pursue when you were stuck in that old relationship. In a way, you are free except you might go back to square one.

We all come from square one. It’s OK. It’ll be quite refreshing if you speak that to a young gun. Possibilities to them is all matters.

In short, don’t get too personal with your former employer, even when you have loved it or you have contribute to it heavily. That is what you chose to do, isn’t it? Let’s put that all in the past, we’ll move on and find another to do business with, shall we?

Calm down and have fun

Maybe so many of your friends have already told you, but you might still not sure how to do it. Here’s my list to calm myself down:

  • brush teeth twice a day
  • taking time washing hands
  • remain relaxed normal schedule
  • learn to breathe when off topic
  • say the last word louder to confirm
  • maintain the low and soft vocal

Omg, how silly is that? Yes that’s my silly list, I have my own way to stay calm. But you can see, other than some common tips, there’re things I personally like to do. This is exactly what I want you to do, find something you like to do, because now you should have plenty of time do it with no excuse. Hah.

If you find you can’t be functional, try to reduce the things you need to do everyday. The whole point is to get some peaceful moment that you can be you again. This is also the perfect time that you can do things that you really want to do. Open yourself up once again.

Look for new job responsibly

Don’t look for new jobs in a desperate way. You don’t want to get into that, instead, you want to put the job search into some perspective. For instance, it’s your career, you still want to plan for your future even when the future starts to change directions. Yes, take turns, if I can’t bend it, I’ll have to think about what the future needs and then turn with it.

Another thing is, you need to organize your job search, because you can be quite overwhelmed with the people that you talk to and the company that you are going to pursue. When you don’t have a choice, everything could seem like a quick cure. Don’t fall for this trap, you always have a choice, you just need to figure it out based on the current environment. It’s not going to be easy, because you could be too comfortable for too long, and now you just get fucked to start new. Thus you really need to put some additional effort and put this exercise into some perspective and remind yourself you are not going to get it right right away. Anything takes practice and it’ll take time. Give yourself some room but work responsibly.

Summary

Getting laid off is something, but it can also demonstrate your personalities and your capabilities vividly. Whether you can pull yourself out is being tested in front your own eye. Have some fun and be brave.
